3 Days in Tulum: The Itinerary We'd Plan for a Friend Staying at the House

Quick answer

For 3 days in Tulum, spend day one settling in on the beach and watching sunset from a rooftop, day two at the Tulum ruins and Playa Paraíso before the heat, then an afternoon at the spa and dinner at NÜ Tulum, and day three on a cenote or the Muyil canals in Sian Ka'an, ending with dinner at Climo. Base yourself on the beach road so the sea is the default, and use taxis for the north end and evenings.

Three days is enough for Tulum if you don't try to do all of it. This is the plan we'd sketch for a friend staying with us at Km 8.7 on the beach road: one day to land and get sand on your feet, one day for the ruins and the famous beach while it's still cool, and one day out in the water and jungle south of us. Everything early happens early for a reason. The heat at midday is real, and the best hours at the ruins and on Playa Paraíso are the first ones.

A few things hold the whole plan together. Tulum runs largely on cash, so carry pesos in small notes. Our shared bikes cover the beach road by day, and for longer hops or anything after dark, take a taxi. Our concierge is around 24/7, so if you want something on this list booked, just ask. And if a day goes sideways because of weather or sargassum, swap day two and day three. No rush. We'll be here.

Day 1: Land, then the beach

  • Afternoon

    Arrive by private transfer

We run private transfers from both Tulum International Airport (TQO) and Cancun International Airport (CUN). Tulum's airport is about 30 miles from us; Cancun is about 90 miles north. Ask our concierge to book it between 30 days and 24 hours before you land, and you skip the taxi queue entirely. Check-in is at 3:00 pm; if you're early, we'll hold your bags.

  • Late afternoon

XELA Beach Club and the pool

Don't plan anything for the first afternoon. Go down to the sand. The beach club is for our guests and serves light, locally inspired organic dishes through the day, so a late lunch with your feet in the sand is the whole agenda. The pool is right there, towels ready, if the sea's choppy.

  • Sunset

    Our rooftop

The rooftop looks over jungle on one side and sea on the other, a full 360 degrees. It's open from sunrise to sunset, and the last hour of light is when we'd send you up. It's the quickest way to understand where you are: the green of the Mayan jungle running inland, the Caribbean in front.

  • Evening

    Dinner at XELA Izakaya

After a travel day, stay in. Our Izakaya serves an Asian-inspired menu by the sea every evening, alongside international favorites if someone in your group wants something simpler. Tell us about any dietary needs ahead of time; gluten-free and dairy-free are no trouble.

Day 2: Ruins, Playa Paraíso, spa, NÜ

  • 8:00 am

    Tulum ruins, first thing

The ruins sit at the north end of the beach, inside Parque del Jaguar, which publishes hours of 8:00 am to 7:00 pm with last entry at 5:00 pm. Be at the gate when it opens. Taking a taxi up from us is simplest. The archaeological zone is a separate ticket from the park, and access rules inside the park changed in 2026 (free access was announced in July), so check the signs and ask what any charge covers.

  • 10:00 am

    Playa Paraíso

Walk on to Playa Paraíso, the wide white beach just by the ruins and the one in most Tulum photos. It's the busiest stretch on the coast, so head south from the main access and the crowd thins. The water near shore is usually calm and shallow, but there are no lifeguards. Leave before noon, when the sun's at its hardest.

  • Lunch

    Los Bowls de Guadalupe

A roadside shack and something of a Tulum institution: organic bites, smoothies and bowls. It's the right weight for a hot day between the beach and the spa, and it's part of our family of places.

  • Afternoon

    La Valise SPA

La Valise Spa is just down the path, open every day from 9 am to 7 pm, and the afternoon after a morning at the ruins is exactly when to use it. Massages, rituals, facials and herbal soaks happen in our two spa cabins or in your suite. If you're travelling as two, there's a private air-conditioned space for treatments side by side. Products are 100% natural.

  • Dinner

    NÜ Tulum

Our jungle-side sister restaurant, recommended by the Michelin Guide, cooks a mix of modern and traditional Mexican with Caribbean flavors and local, sustainable ingredients. Of the three nights, this is the one to book ahead and dress for. We can make the reservation for you.

Day 3: Water and jungle, then Climo

  • 7:30 am

    Private yoga on the property

Start slow with a private yoga class or breathwork session, led by instructors from Samadhi Studio. Book it the day before so it's waiting for you.

  • Morning

A cenote, or the Muyil canals in Sian Ka'an

Pick one. A cenote swim is the easier, shorter morning, and one of the best things you can do in this part of Mexico. Muyil and the Sian Ka'an canals take more of the day: Sian Ka'an is the biosphere reserve where Tulum's coastline ends to the south, and the canals there are a world away from the beach clubs. Both go through our tours desk. That's an easy one to arrange. If you'd rather mark the trip with something quieter, we also set up a Temazcal by a cenote or a cacao ceremony.

  • Afternoon

    Back to the sand

Give the last afternoon to the beach out front. Room service runs from 1:00 pm to 10:00 pm if you'd rather eat on your terrace. Before you go, have a look around The XELA Market, where we keep handcrafted objects by artisans from across Mexico.

  • Dinner

    Climo at Encantada

For the last night, Climo pairs contemporary Mexican cooking with Sicilian technique: handmade pastas, wood-fired pizzas and fresh seafood. It's more relaxed than NÜ, which is the right note to end on. If you'd rather stay put, we can set up a private dinner at a table overlooking the sea, or a Nakawé mezcal tasting for two.
